Gossip columnist Perez Hilton is making his New York stage debut, joining the cast of the off-Broadway musical “NEWSical the Musical: End of the World Edition” for a four-week run starting next month at the Kirk Theatre at Theatre Row.
Hilton begins preview performances Sept. 8; his official opening date is set for Sept. 17.
“NEWSical,” like Hilton, turns headlines into punchlines in its revolving lineup of songs that lampoon current events and celebrities such as President Obama and Lady Gaga.
For Hilton’s arrival, composer-lyricist Rick Crom will add a Chick-fil-A number and a song about the controversial columnist performed by the man himself.
“Dreams do come true, if you believe. And I believe, big time!” Hilton wrote on his website. “I am beyond thrilled, nervous and zen about making my New York theater debut.”
Mark Waldrop directs the production, and the cast features Christine Pedi, Christina Bianco, Michael West, Tommy Walker, Amy Griffin and Ryan Knowles.
Hilton (real name Mario Lavandeira) earned a bachelor’s in drama from the Tisch School of the Arts in New York and has had a series of small-screen cameos, including on “Glee,” “WWF Raw” and “90210.”
“NEWSical” premiered in 2004 at the John Houseman Studio in New York. In 2011 the show was nominated for two 2011 Drama Desk Awards, for outstanding revue and outstanding lyrics.
