Despite their top player, All-City Section performer Julie Bracamontes, going down with an ankle injury in game one, Garfield rallied to win its season opener behind Christal Lara, who had eight kills, six blocks and seven service aces, and Laura Sandoval, who had 13 kills and 12 digs. Priscilla Dominguez added 12 digs and four aces for visiting Garfield. Marshall fell to 1-1.

Verdugo Hills d. Hoover, 25-11, 25-11, 25-12
Sara Bonet had 10 kills and Jennifer Espindola had 27 assists for host Verdugo Hills in the season opener for both teams.
