Long Beach police to canvass street for leads in fatal shooting

Long Beach police will canvass a street Wednesday in the South Wrigley neighborhood where a 51-year-old man was fatally shot this month.
Officers will go door-to-door from 3 to 4 p.m. on the 2300 block of Eucalyptus Avenue to search for possible witnesses and distribute fliers in the murder investigation of Herbert Shephard.
Investigators said they did not know of a motive for the shooting and believe it may have been a case of mistaken identity.
HOMICIDE REPORT: A story for every victim
The shooting occurred April 5. Long Beach police officers responded to a call on the residential street.
When officers arrived, they found Shephard and another man with apparent gunshot wounds.
Shephard of Los Angeles died three days later at the hospital, triggering a homicide investigation. The second victim survived; his name was not released.
