5 homes burned after fire jumps into Fairfield subdivision

Five homes were burned Tuesday evening in Fairfield, Calif., after a grass fire that apparently began on the side of a freeway jumped into a residential subdivision.
Two of the homes were destroyed and three others were damaged, the Fairfield Police Department said. The blaze broke out along Interstate 80 on Tuesday afternoon. The homes were along Marigold Drive.
As flames were pushed by winds, officers went door to door to evacuate residents and make sure no one was trapped inside their homes.
“There was a good stiff breeze blowing. That tended to stoke the fire,” Sgt. Jeff Osgood told The Times.
He said officers had to force their way into some apartment units. No injuries were reported.
About 200 firefighters from several jurisdictions responded to the fire, which burned about 40 acres. The cause was under investigation.
Resident Darrell Prill watched as firefighters went into his home to put out the flames shooting from his roof.
“It was very scary, but I have homeowner’s insurance,” Prill told Fox 40 News.
