Football: Freshman QB J.T. Daniels of Mater Dei faces St. John Bosco
- Share via
It’s getting a little scary how well freshman quarterback J.T. Daniels has been doing week after week at Santa Ana Mater Dei (6-0).
There was 290 yards passing and six touchdowns against La Mirada. There was 285 yards passing and four touchdowns against Upland. There was 297 yards passing and three touchdowns aginast Edison. Last week, there was 446 yards passing and four touchdowns against Orange Lutheran. Freshmen aren’t supposed to ace test after test.
Not since a freshman named Matt Barkley have the Monarchs had a young quarterback perform so brilliantly.
“Right now, he’s living the dream and we’re going to keep doing what we do,” Coach Bruce Rollinson said.
Daniels gets its toughest test yet on Friday night against unbeaten St. John Bosco (6-0). As impressive as the Braves’ offense has been this season, it’s the improvement on defense that has made St. John Bosco win six consecutive games via running clocks.
We’ll see if Mater Dei is able to run the ball with Brandon LaMarche. That’s the way to take pressure off Daniels, but he has been intercepted only once in 119 attempts.
It’s a big-time game with a big-time atmosphere, and the Monarchs have confidence in their first-year QB.
