It seems like people always want to speculate how long veteran coaches will stick around, but Kevin Rooney of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame said Monday that he looks forward to a 38th season with the Knights in 2017.
The fact he got two hip replacements “makes me feel like new.”
Notre Dame went 5-6 this season but the future can be bright. The Knights’ freshman team won the Mission League championship and there also were nine freshmen on junior varsity.
Notre Dame is well known for caring more about how its coaches are developing players on and off the field than win-loss records.
The most interesting development could come next spring when re-leaguing moves into high gear. There’s already talk about turning the seven-team Mission League into two five-team leagues and bringing in Cathedral, St. Francis and Salesian.
It’s usually a massive debate that breaks out, and look for that to happen again. Rooney plans to be around to join in the fun.
