Grief counselors were at Inglewood Morningside on Monday helping football players deal with the death of assistant coach Eddy Lewis, who was killed in a shooting early Saturday in South Los Angeles.
Lewis, 28, was dropping off a friend when a gunman opened fire, according to the LAPD.
Lewis was a standout defensive back during his playing days at Woodland Hills Taft in 2002 and 2003. He was a linebacker coach at Morningside and worked as a nurse. Two of his brothers also coach at Morningside.
“He was a great kid and a role model for our kids, and they are devastated,” Morningside Coach Derwin Henderson said.
“What a tragedy,” said Troy Starr, who coached Lewis at Taft.
