No. 18 BYU loses QB, and game to Utah State

Backup quarterback Darell Garretson threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns, leading Utah State to a 35-20 upset of No. 18 Brigham Young on Friday night at Provo, Utah.
BYU quarterback Taysom Hill, a Heisman Trophy hopeful, broke his left leg late in the first half and is probably done for the season. Without him, the Cougars (4-1) never recovered from a 28-14 halftime deficit on a night when former star quarterback Jim McMahon had his No. 9 jersey retired.
Garretson, a sophomore who took over for injured Chuckie Keeton in the second half of a Week 3 win over Wake Forest, also ran for a score. He was 14 for 17 for 257 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.
Fresno State wins
Donovan Lewis and Jamal Ellis intercepted consecutive fourth-quarter passes and Fresno State pulled away to defeated San Diego State, 24-13, in “The Battle for the Oil Can” game at Fresno.
Ellis’ interception of a Nick Bawden pass set up Marteze Waller’s clinching five-yard touchdown run for Fresno State (3-3, 2-0 Mountain West Conference) The game was the 1,000th in program history, with the Bulldogs improving to 580-393-27. They are 23-27-4 against San Diego State (2-3, 1-1).

Brandon Radcliff ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and Louisville (5-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) had two interceptions and two safeties in a 28-6 victory at Syracuse (2-3, 0-1). . . . Boston College dismissed junior cornerback Bryce Jones from the program for an unspecified violation of team rules.
