Andy Murray ousted early again at Indian Wells

For the second consecutive year, a highly regarded Andy Murray of Scotland was sent packing in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament.

Last year, it was a young American, Donald Young, pulling off the upset. This year, it was 92nd rankedGuillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain stunning the world’s fourth-ranked player.

Garcia Lopez, playing well above his ranking, won, 6-4, 6-2. Had you just wandered in to watch without knowing who was who, Garcia-Lopez would have appeared to be the No. 4 player.

Twice in the second set, Murray got to love-40 on Garcia-Lopez’s serve, and twice, Garcia-Lopez rallied to hold. The match took 1 hour 40 minutes before a noisy nighttime crowd in the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Garcia-Lopez served at a 60% clip and Murray failed on all seven of his break-point chances.

“He hardly missed a ball all night,” Murray said afterward. “I didn’t make him hit shots that he didn’t want to hit.”

Saturday’s torunament was a complete sellout, meaning that 32,000 tickets and general admission passes were sold.
