Meanwhile, the Woody Herman Foundation has announced plans to provide financial assistance to ailing and needy professional musicians, especially those with a jazz background. The foundation has received donations from several jazz organizations and will augment the coffers with fund-raising activities and a benefit performance later this year. Herman, a big band leader for more than 50 years, died Oct. 29, 1987, at age 74.
