LAPD Honors 2 Veterans for Their Years of Service

Two veteran police officers were honored Tuesday for their outstanding job performance and 83 years of collective service to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Robbery-Homicide Detective John St. John, who ranks No. 1 in seniority in the department, received a 45-year service pin in recognition of his service and dedication. Capt. William O. Gartland, robbery-homicide commander and St. John’s boss, received a 35-year service pin.
St. John, a 48-year veteran who is still on active duty, said that although there have been changes in the Police Department, many things have remained the same.
“Some of the laws have changed,” the 72-year-old detective said. “The city has even changed. But murder is murder.”
