Police apparently put the lid on the case of the missing manhole covers today when they arrested two men for investigation of stealing the metal disks.
The men were arrested shortly after 9 a.m. when they drove into a downtown metal salvage yard in a pickup truck loaded with 2,600 pounds of allegedly stolen manhole covers, police Detective Bob Readheimer said.
“Both men and their truck matched a description we had of suspects who were spotted by citizens lifting a manhole cover just a short time before in Santa Monica before driving off,” Readheimer said. “They drove to the right place at the right time.”
Police had found some of the more than 185 purloined covers on Tuesday at the same scrap metals yard.
