LONG BEACH — Two residents will try to sailboard to Santa Catalina Island and back Friday and Saturday, in an effort to raise money for a city gang prevention program.
Sailboarders Michael Hughes and Douglas Kent will donate their time, experience and resources. Residents and local businesses are asked to sponsor the sailors on a per-mile or round-trip basis. All profits will be donated to the nonprofit group Partners of Parks, for an at-risk youth program that aims to deter children from joining gangs.
The program concentrates on junior high schools and provides positive alternate activities.
Pledges can be made at the Partners of Parks main office, 2760 Studebaker Road, Long Beach. Cash and checks will be accepted, checks payable to Partner of Parks, Attention: Catalina Crossing.
For information about the sailboard event, call Kent at 597-3587.
