In other Irvine World Tournament first-round games:
Capistrano Valley 61, Savanna 60--Savanna cut the lead to one on a basket by Marlon Watson with 21 seconds remaining, but the Rebels (3-4) turned the ball over with 14 seconds left and never got another shot. Brett McCorkle had 18 points for Capistrano Valley (7-1).
Corona del Mar 65, Santa Ana 52--Despite making only 10 of its 30 first-half shots, Corona del Mar (3-4) led, 33-14, at halftime.
Woodbridge 75, Orange Lutheran 61--Woodbridge led by as many as 26 late in the third quarter. Mike Fenton scored 17 points for the Warriors (5-2).
University 74, Esperanza 67--Luis Venegas scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter for University (2-4).
Mission Viejo 64, Kennedy 52--Matt Brummel scored 21 points and Mark Wright 20 for Mission Viejo.
Marina 69, Saddleback 46--Cherokee Parks scored 28 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Marina (5-3), the tournament’s top-seeded team. Vince Chaverst led Saddleback (2-4) with 12 points.
Irvine 61, Brea-Olinda 48--Center John Molle scored a season-high 39 points and had 10 rebounds for Irvine (7-0), ranked second in the county.
In the Fullerton boys’ basketball tournament:
Buena Park 58, La Mirada 47--Angel Barrios scored 20 points in the first-round game for Buena Park.
Cerritos 62, Los Amigos 35--Los Amigos (0-4) was never in the first-round game after falling behind, 22-5, in the first quarter.
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Orange 63, Valencia 58--Carlos Duran had 25 points and seven assists for visiting Orange (4-3). John Wilson had 20 points for Valencia (6-2).
Tustin 79, Redlands 64--Thomas Clayton scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds for visiting Tustin (8-1).
El Toro 83, Trabuco Hills 62--Rob Johnson scored 20 points and had seven assists to lead host El Toro (5-3) over winless Trabuco Hills.
In the Cypress girls’ basketball tournament:
Marina 50, Mater Dei 48--Kim Shepherd made two free throws with 50 seconds left to advance Marina (7-0) to the semifinals.
Huntington Beach 67, Cypress 66--Amber Ambrose hit a turn-around jumper with 20 seconds for Huntington Beach (5-2).
In the Bolsa Grande girls’ basketball tournament:
Estancia 52, Capistrano Valley 38--Melody Earle had 21 points and Robin Cordrey 11 for Estancia (8-0) in a semifinal game.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Sunny Hills 2, Mater Dei 0--Heidi Gugler and Leah Russell each scored for Sunny Hills against Mater Dei, the defending Southern Section Division 3-A champion.
Sunny Hills (7-0) was unranked in the Division 3-A preseason coaches’ poll; Mater Dei (5-2-1) is ranked third in 4-A.
Los Alamitos 1, Corona del Mar 0--Brooke Davis scored on an assist by Julie Harris in the second half for host Los Alamitos (6-1).
Katella 5, Savanna 3--Carol Hipp had a school-record four goals for host Katella (4-3-1). Kim Weyer scored three goals for Savanna (5-4-1).
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Mater Dei 1, Century 0--Brian Cook made a crossing pass to Trevor Ickes, who headed the ball to Master Polo, whose header with 10 minutes left won it for Mater Dei (5-2).
University 1, Trabuco Hills 0--With five minutes remaining, Mark Redford headed a pass to Anssi Halman, who scored for visiting University (6-2).
Orange 3, Laguna Hills 0--Juan Viveros scored two goals for Orange (6-0-2).
