Encino Golfer Shoots a 71 in Junior Event

Ben Cherney of Encino fired a second-round 71 Wednesday to lead the four-player California-Oregon team into fourth place with one round remaining in the American Junior Golf Assn. Northern Telecom Tournament at Brentwood Country Club in Nashville, Tenn.
Cherney, who will be a senior next fall at Brentwood High, shot a 79 in the opening round of the tournament.
In another tournament, Greg Bell of Studio City earned a berth in the 95th Southern California Golf Assn. amateur championship by firing a one-over-par 73 at Lake San Marcos Golf Course.
Bell was one of 10 players in a field of 64 to advance to the SCGA Amateur, to be held July 22-24 at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights.
