Austria’s Fasching Wins Race Across America

Wolfgang Fasching of Austria, who was third as a rookie in 1996, won the Race Across American Saturday, keeping the lead for the seventh consecutive day.
Fasching reached the final station in Savannah, Ga., at 2:07 p.m (PDT) to complete the 3,042.39-mile transcontinental race in 9 days 4 hours 50 minutes. Fasching averaged 13.8 mph and 331 miles per day.
Danny Chew of Pittsburgh, the 1996 RAAM champion, was second overall after passing through Millen, Ga., at 5:33 p.m. (PDT), 30.26 miles from the finish.
Seana Hogan of San Jose retained her lead in the women’s division and was fifth overall. Hogan reached Gainesville, Ga., at 4:16 p.m. (PDT), 2,775.78 miles into the race.
Beat Gfeller of Switzerland led the senior men and was ninth overall. Gfeller passed through Chattanooga, Tenn., at 1:32 p.m. (PDT), 2,637.97 miles into the race.
