Albertson’s Inc. said Wednesday it will close a Buena Park distribution center, part of a consolidation move tied to its divestiture of 117 stores in California.
Distribution centers in Brea, Irvine and La Habra will remain open.
Albertson’s agreed to shed the stores to win antitrust approval of its acquisition of American Stores, owner of Lucky stores and Sav-On.
Albertson’s said the Buena Park closure will result in the loss of “very few, if any,” jobs.
“We’re going to hold them to that,” Patrick D. Kelly, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 952 in Orange, said Wednesday. “We hope that’s the case.”
Some workers have already been laid off, Kelly said, but the job loss was limited because many of the employees took jobs with companies that bought Lucky and Albertsons stores.
Union and company officials will meet over the next few days to discuss Albertson’s decision to close the Buena Park center and the effect on workers, Kelly said.
The Irvine facility supplies Lucky stores, the Brea distribution center serves Albertsons stores and the La Habra facility supplies Sav-On Drugs stores. The Buena Park distribution center also supplies Lucky stores.
The company expects to complete the consolidation in late summer or early fall next year.
