Edison International, the energy company that bought the naming rights to the Angels’ stadium, has talked recently with a representative of prospective owners Henry T. Nicholas III and Henry Samueli, sources said Wednesday.
The discussion, described as strictly introductory, follows a similar courtesy call to Anaheim City Manager James Ruth. Nicholas and Samueli, the billionaire co-founders of Irvine-based Broadcom Corp., lead an investment group offering close to $450 million to buy the Angels and Mighty Ducks from the Walt Disney Co.
As part of Edison’s 20-year sponsorship deal, worth a reported $50 million, Anaheim Stadium became Edison International Field of Anaheim last year. In the event of a franchise sale, Edison retains the right to cancel or renegotiate the sponsorship agreement, but corporate officials have expressed their satisfaction with the deal.
