Top of the World, in Santa Monica

With no grass to mow or garage to keep tidy, this penthouse in a 13-story Santa Monica high-rise is no traditional home.
About this home: Originally an apartment building designed by A. Quincy Jones and partly owned by actor William Holden when built in 1962, the high-rise was gutted and turned into condominiums in 2001. Completed in December, the project includes about 40 units, all sold except this top-floor penthouse and a smaller unit on another level.
The owner-builder is Hoyt S. Pardee Inc. Pardee, who has been building homes and high-rises in Los Angeles for decades, and architect William Dale Brantley, of the architectural firm aArts, led the renovation.
